Chapter Six

I wasn’t going to let them happen.

I wasn’t going to let them take her.

Not only had my sight returned, not only were my movements coming back as something both sharp and jerky, more within my control.

Good, especially since it was obvious what the Titans were after.

Or, I should say, who.

Seph.

Glass crashed inside, raining down on us. I didn’t think. I pushed Seph to the ground and covered her body with my own. She let out a surprised scream, reaching up to cover her head in the same way I attempted to.

“Do you know somewhere you can hide in here?” I asked her as the ground quaked beneath us.

I ignored the way my heart pounded with dread, ignored the way my mind filled with questions about what happened to Hades and Apollo, where they could be, and how this Titan managed to slip past them. I even ignored the list of suspects who popped up in my head once I realized who the Titan was after in the first place.

Seph nodded once. “There’s a room we can go to,” she said as I stood up. I offered her my hand, which she took, allowing me to get her back on her feet. “Hades showed me. We have to go through the library to get there.”

The library. I had been there before. We had a meeting there a few days ago. I nearly shook my head, allowing myself to be momentarily distracted by the strange passage of time. Why did it feel like months had passed from that moment?

“Go there,” I instructed her, pushing her forward so she was in front of me.

“What are you going to do?” she demanded to know, glancing back at me with wide eyes.

“I’ll be right behind you,” I assured her. “But the Titan wants you and there’s no way in hell I’m letting that happen. Go! I’ll follow you but you have to move now!”

My frantic voice seemed to get Seph to act. She took off and I followed. I was still woozy; it was difficult for me to follow her with ease. I stumbled every couple of steps, like I was some sort of newborn baby who was still trying to find my footing. Luckily, the Titan seemed to have his own trouble keeping up with both of us. He was destructive, crashing into things without caring, but his movements were sloppy. If we could just get to that room, I was certain we’d be able to beat him there.

Seph, on the other hand, had a speed and a grace even I didn’t possess. She was able to move quickly down the hallway, and I followed close behind. Every couple of seconds, she looked over her shoulder, trying to make sure I was still there.

“Go!” I repeated, after the fourth time. She used energy she didn’t have in order to keep doing it, and the more I moved, the better I seemed to be. She needed to focus on getting to safety rather than worry about me.
